Podfic Recs: A Handful of Comfort Podfics

This morning, the plan was to come home and record fun podfic. But then Wednesday happened: I inadvertently deleted (never to be seen again) half-a-day's work, I had a long meeting in which nothing was accomplished, a piece of my back tooth broke off (I kid you not), my train home was late, meaning that I then missed my connecting bus, and my refrigerator is empty. Suffice it to say, it's not to be. On days like today, I am saved by comfort podfic, and since I'm not up to recording, I thought I would rec a handful of my comfort pods to you.

I require very specific things from comfort podfic. They are the podfics that I dig out when I desperately need a smile and a hug. Therefore, they tend to fall into the following categories:

1) They are not epic. I love epic!podfic, but when I'm stressed or down, my attention span dwindles to that of a gnat. Generally, my comfort pods are 10 minutes to 1 hour (very rarely there may be one that is a couple of hours, but never a long, long, long one).
2) They have a degree of lightness to them. The angst, if there is any, is short-lived and easily remedied, and they always, always have a happy ending. NO TEARS HERE.
3) No slow build-ups. See above about attention span. These are quick to capture me and don't lag. No meandering tales here (much as I love them).

So...if you're in need of a bit of a pick-me-up...

look no further )

[Podfic] The Not-Valentine's Itty-Bitty Podficlet Anthology

Happy Day!!!! It's Valentine's Day today. But, the thing is, I don't celebrate V-day. I don't hate it. It doesn't make me ragey. I've just been single for so long that it's a null holiday for me. But, it's the middle of February, and if ever there was a month in which we needed to celebrate something to get us through, it's February. Therefore, I present the Not-Valentine's Itty-Bitty Podficlet Anthology. 23 podfics of ficlets and drabbles (no more than 1000 words each) from 11 fandoms. They range from angst to PWP to fluff to humor. There's femmeslash, gen, het, and slash. What they do have in common is that they are all brilliant little snippets that build a whole world in just a few words.

My very great thanks to all the authors for the permission to record these fics. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it, and how much fun I had recording! Blanket permission is a godsend for projects like these and everyone has been so wonderful! Also, as always, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] teas_me and [livejournal.com profile] takola for the uber-fast beta job.

You can download the entire anthology from the links below the cover art, but go under the cut and you'll find individual download links and live streaming for each podficlet. You can also find information on each podficlet and links back to the original text.

Happy Day everyone!!!

H5O Podfic: Aloha Aku No, Aloha Mai No by queenklu

When you're just starting to splash around in a new fandom, there is really nothing like finding an awesome author with a blanket permission statement on their masterlist or profile. [livejournal.com profile] queenklu was actually one of my introductions to H5O fandom, through [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins's fabulous podfic of I Have a History of Taking Off My Shirt (totally awesome--both the story, and the podfic--check them out, immediately).

When I read Aloha Aku No, Aloha Mai No, I just couldn't resist. Danny with his hibiscus petals, and Steve with his repressed, confused denial. [livejournal.com profile] queenklu writes with such humor and compassion and all-round wonderfulness. Her dialog is just so……. sparkly and spot-on and I just want to hug all her stories tight and never let them go.

Huge thank you to [livejournal.com profile] queenklu because between the wonderful writing and Blanket Permission, you are so awesome!!! And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] takola, who listened to this pretty much the minute I sent it to her just so that I could get it posted before I travel for the holidays. ♥

H5O Podfic: Hand Signals by alamo_girl80

So…while I've been having my wee sulk, I've been podficcing!! Might as well be productive while sulking, right? I decided it is time to branch out, break out of my fandom rut. Because I consume in LOTS of different fandoms, but I only seem to produce in, well, Harry Potter. So, last week I was sulking and reading and I came across this fic and by the end of it, I was just so happy!!! I wrote this kind of hand-wavy, flailing, incoherent email to the author that was like "ummm…. you don't know me….podfic….your fic!!! Guh! Happy happy!! Can I?" Which she somehow decoded and said "Sure!" almost instantaneously (for which I am forever grateful).

This fic, guys, it's…well… hand!kink porn, and it's just so lush and lovely and fun (it was inspired by this photo of Steve's huge hand around Danny's wrist). I love the descriptions in it, the humor, the hotness and…. geez… Just go read it. Now. OR….you could listen :)

Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] alamo_girl80 for her permission and her enthusiasm. And, as always, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ladydeth12 and [livejournal.com profile] takola, to whom I said "not your fandom, but will you beta anyway?" and they said "of course!" and didn't even make me feel guilty about it. *glomps*

I blame revolutionaryjo

So, those of you who actually read this journal know that I use podfic as an entrée to fandoms and pairings that I don't ordinarily read. This started because I discovered podfic in Harry Potter (of course), then quickly realized that there was practically nothing in the pairings I usually read.

When you listen to podfic as much as I do, the Harry Potter collection doesn't last long. So I started feeling around, using the readers that I really, really liked as a way into fandoms and pairings I've never considered. So, when [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo posted the podfic for Lost at the Edge of the Sun by [archiveofourown.org profile] james, I didn't hesitate. I mean...it's [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo!!!! This is the woman who convinced me that you could be a non-British person reading in a British fandom and not have to fake a terrible accent! That the reading can go so far beyond the accent that it doesn't matter. How bad could it be?

Very, very not at all bad, it turns out. As usual, [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo has impeccable taste in fic and a smooth, easy way of reading that just makes me take a deep breath and relax. And the story was one I understood. I've lived in Hawaii, after all. I know how expensive it is, and how easy it could be to get in way, way, way over your head. [archiveofourown.org profile] james did a wonderful job of portraying that swing where homelessness goes from ridiculous to a serious option. So the story resonated with me, and of course the podfic was exquisite.

So, here I am. A person who has never seen the original Hawaii Five-O, and never seen the new Hawaii Five-O, desperately searching for more Steve/Danny fics to fill the hole that was created by Lost at the Edge of the Sun. Yup. I blame [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo. It's all her fault.
